چکیده
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the proper indication of adjunctive BRAF(V600E) mutation analysis at the time of ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules. METHODS This study included 518 nodules in 479 patients who underwent ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration with BRAF(V600E) mutation. We calculated and compared the diagnostic performances of cytology and cytology with BRAF(V600E) mutation analysis to detect malignancy among thyroid nodules according to ultrasound features and size. RESULTS Sensitivity, negative predictive value, and accuracy of cytology with BRAF(V600E) mutation analysis were significantly higher than those of cytology alone in thyroid nodules with suspicious ultrasound features, regardless of size. Diagnostic performances did not show significant differences between cytology and cytology with BRAF(V600E) mutation analysis in nodules without any suspicious ultrasound features, regardless of size. CONCLUSION The BRAF(V600E) mutation analysis was a useful adjunctive diagnostic tool in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules with suspicious ultrasound features regardless of size.

This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of BRAFV600E mutation and DNA ploidy determination for Papillary Thyroid Micro-Carcinoma (PTMC) through fine-needle aspiration. Clinical data, including histology, patient population statistics and clinical results were gathered. Patients’ thyroid-micro-lesions were made into FNA-stained smears, DNA was extracted from the smears for different cy...
متن کاملIs Follow-up BRAFV600E Mutation Analysis Helpful in the Differential Diagnosis of Thyroid Nodules with Negative Results on Initial Analysis?
BACKGROUND We evaluated the usefulness of follow-up BRAF(V600E) mutation analysis using ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration (US-FNA) in diagnosis of thyroid nodules showing negative BRAFV600E mutation on prior analysis. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDING A total of 49 patients (men: 6, women: 43, mean age: 50.4 years) with 49 thyroid nodules were included. Patients had undergone initial ...
متن کاملBRAFV600E mutation testing in fine needle aspirates of thyroid nodules: potential value of real-time PCR.
The BRAF(V600E) mutation is a valuable adjunctive diagnostic tool to ultrasound (US)-guided fine-needle aspiration (US-FNA). The objective of this study was to investigate the potential value of realtime PCR to detect BRAF(V600E) mutation. This study included 447 thyroid nodules in 420 patients who underwent US-FNA and BRAF(V600E) mutation analysis using dual priming oligonucleotide-based multi...
متن کاملThe diagnostic value of fine needle aspiration in comparison with frozen section in thyroid nodules: A 20-year study
Background: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is the most important method in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules before surgery. Recently, the efficiency of FNA in thyroid nodule management has been debatable. On the other hand, intraoperative frozen section (FS) has been used to confirm the diagnosis of FNA and select the proper surgical approach. In this regard, the present study aimed to assess the...

PURPOSE We investigated the merit of ultrasound (US) features and BRAF(V600E) mutation as an additional study of cytology and compared the diagnostic performances of cytology alone, cytology with US correlation, cytology with BRAFV600E mutation, and a combination of cytology, US, and BRAFV600E mutation all together. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study included 185 patients (mean age, 48.4 years;...
